Aurora miraculously awakens and forgives Maleficent. Devastated, Maleficent gives Aurora a kiss of regret on her forehead.
Maleficent and Diaval sneak into the castle with Prince Phillip, but his kiss does not revive Aurora as thought. Angry and heartbroken, Aurora runs back to her father’s castle.ĭespite a plan to keep Aurora locked in King Stefan’s castle until her sixteenth birthday passes the next day, Aurora escapes and is drawn to a spinning wheel where she pricks her finger and falls into a deathlike sleep. Maleficent admits her role when Aurora confronts her. They inadvertently reveal that she is actually King Stefan’s daughter and end up telling her of Aurora’s true origin and of Maleficent’s curse. Maleficent reasons that Prince Phillip may be their last hope of breaking the curse if it should come to pass.Īurora tells the pixies that she plans to leave them to live with Maleficent. Regardless, when Aurora meets Prince Phillip on his way to see King Stefan, the two seem to fall in love at first sight. Maleficent tells Diaval that she only said that to insult Stefan, as true love’s kiss does not exist. Diaval reminds Maleficent of the “true love’s kiss” caveat in her curse. In preparation for her sixteenth birthday, Aurora decides that she would like to leave the pixies’ cottage and live with Maleficent in The Moors. The bond between them grows strong enough that Maleficent decides to lift her curse, but discovers that she is regretfully unable to do so. Maleficent’s kingdom remains dark, but she continues to keep a watchful eye over Aurora’s development, gradually becoming enamored with the innocent little girl.Īt age fifteen, Aurora meets Maleficent and confuses her for her fairy godmother, as she knew that Maleficent had been watching over her since childhood. Years pass and Stefan’s paranoia over Maleficent’s curse grows to the point where he neglects his wife and begins speaking to Maleficent’s wings, kept in a case in his castle. Realizing that the pixies do not know how to properly care for a child, Maleficent begins protecting Aurora from afar and using Diaval to help nurture her. He then entrusts Aurora’s safety to the three pixies, who hide the girl in a secluded woodland cottage where they plan to watch over her for sixteen years and one day. Stefan orders all spinning wheels in the kingdom to be destroyed. When Stefan begs Maleficent to reconsider, she changes her curse to say that the spell can only be broken by the power of “true love’s kiss.”
As retaliation for Stefan’s betrayal, Maleficent curses Aurora to prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel before her sixteenth birthday and to fall into a sleeplike death from which she will never awaken. While Knotgrass, Thistletwit, and Flittle present their blessings upon Stefan’s daughter, Maleficent intrudes on the celebration. Maleficent learns of a royal christening for Stefan’s newborn baby girl Aurora. Maleficent turns Diaval back into a crow and uses him to spy on the human kingdom. Diaval becomes Maleficent’s servant and confidant in exchange for saving his life. Maleficent uses her magic to free a trapped crow by turning him into a human. Stefan becomes the new king while Maleficent uses her rage to darken her own kingdom and swear her revenge. Unable to bring himself to kill the fairy he once purportedly loved, Stefan instead cuts off Maleficent’s wings and presents them to King Henry as evidence of her demise. When his invading army is defeated by Maleficent, King Henry vows that whoever destroys her will marry his daughter Princess Leila and inherit the throne. Maleficent becomes the protector of The Moors. On Maleficent’s sixteenth birthday, Stefan gives her what he calls the gift of “true love’s kiss.”Īs time goes by, Stefan is drawn by the lure of the throne. Stefan learns that iron burns fairies as the two of them begin a romance that develops throughout the years. Maleficent convinces the young boy, Stefan, to return the stolen object. In The Moors, pixies Knotgrass, Thistletwit, and Flittle report to a young winged fairy named Maleficent that the border guards captured a human thief. The vain and greedy King Henry ruled the human kingdom, which was envious of the wealth and beauty that existed in The Moors, where strange and wondrous creatures lived in contentment. Once upon a time, such great discord existed between two neighboring kingdoms that it was said only a great hero or a terrible villain could bring them together.
